Even with modest feed-in rates in Western Australia, exporting your excess solar energy can still provide valuable savings. Understanding the Synergy Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS) ensures you make the most of your solar investment.
Current DEBS Rates (Effective July 1, 2025)
- Peak (3pm – 9pm): 10¢ per kWh
- Off-Peak (Before 3pm & After 9pm): 2¢ per kWh
These rates apply to the first 50 kWh exported to the grid each day. To benefit, you’ll need a bi-directional meter and approvals from both Synergy and Western Power.
Eligibility Criteria
- Residential Customers: Solar inverter capacity of 5 kW or less.
- Non-Residential Customers: Only not-for-profit and educational organizations within Perth and Bunbury regions.
- System Requirements: Approved bi-directional meter and necessary approvals from Synergy and Western Power.
Associated Costs
- DEBS Administration Fee: $12.32 (inc. GST)
- Metering Costs: $105.93 (inc. GST) for single or three-phase meters
Additional costs may apply if Western Power requires communication equipment on the meter for grid management purposes.
Application Process
- Synergy Application: Submit your intended system and power supply details. Upon approval, you’ll receive a Synergy reference number.
- Western Power Application: Use the Synergy reference number to apply for network compatibility. Upon approval, your meter will be scheduled for replacement or reprogramming.
- Installation: Once approvals are in place, proceed with the installation. Your connection to the DEBS will be reflected in your next billing cycle.
It’s advisable to consult with a local solar company to guide you through this process and ensure optimal system sizing, avoiding unnecessary expenses.
